What is Multimedia?

Multimedia is content that uses a combination of different content forms such as text, audio, images, animation, video and interactive content. Multimedia contrasts with media that use only rudimentary computer displays such as text-only or traditional forms of printed or hand-produced material.


Here can be described that multimedia is a combination of data or media to convey information so that it presented more interesting.
by Najjar (1996) : Multimedia is informing uses a combination of text, graphics, sound, video, and animation.
by Rosch (1996) : Multimedia is a combination of computer and video
by Mc Cormick (1996) : Multimedia is a combination of three elements, namely sound, image, and text.
according to Turban (2002) : Multimedia is a combination of two or more media input or output of the data, in which the media can be either audio (voice / music) animation, video, text, graphics, and images.
by Robin & Linda (2001) : Multimedia is a tool that creates a dynamic and interactive presentation that combines text, graphics, animation, audio, and video images.

Multimedia can be recorded and played, displayed, dynamic, interacted with or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance. Multimedia devices are electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content. Multimedia is distinguished from mixed media in fine art; by including audio, for example, it has a broader scope. The term "rich media" is synonymous for interactive multimedia. Hypermedia scales up the amount of media content in multimedia application.
Multimedia is also used in education and business. In the world of education, multimedia is used as a medium of instruction, both in the classroom and individually or self-taught. In the business world, multimedia is used as a media company profile, product profile, even as media information kiosks and training in e-learning system.


Categorization of multimedia

Multimedia may be broadly divided into linear and non-linear categories. Linear active content progresses often without any navigational control for the viewer such as a cinema presentation. Non-linear uses interactivity to control progress as with a video game or self-paced computer based training. Hypermedia is an example of non-linear content.
Multimedia presentations can be live or recorded. A recorded presentation may allow interactivity via a navigation system. A live multimedia presentation may allow interactivity via an interaction with the presenter or performer.


Until now, there are three types of multimedia, that is :
Multimedia interactive : Users can control what and when multimedia elements will be transmitted or displayed.
Multimedia hyperactivity : Multimedia type having a structure of elements associated with the user to steer. it can be said that this type of multimedia has many links (links) that connect the multimedia elements that exist.
Multimedia linear : Users simply be a spectator and enjoy multimedia products presented from beginning to end.
 

At first multimedia includes only the media that the consumption of the sense of sight (still images, text, motion picture video, and motion picture fiction / animation), and consumption of auditory (sound) and also in the form of (tangible). In the development of multimedia includes kinetic (motion) and smell the consumption of the sense of smell. Multimedia began incorporating elements of kinetic since was applied to three-dimensional film show combined with the movement of the chair seat spectator. Kinetic, and 3-dimensional movies evoke a realistic sense.
The smell started to become part of a multimedia since it was discovered in reproductive technologies smell through telecommunications.
